Men of the United States Air Force 821st Radar Squadron will be honored at a dance held at the Baker Community Center Saturday from 8 to midnight.

The radar station is in the process of being phased out and citizens are giving the dance as a farewell party.

Students from small Northeastern Oregon high schools might feel right at home at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.

Dixie Lund and Tim Seydel did.

Lund, the university’s president, and Seydel, association vice president of marketing, development and public affairs, is a La Grande native. Both are EOU graduates.

As the Baker School District continues its negotiations toward developing a calendar to determine whether students will attend classes four days or five days next year, directors also are bargaining with teachers over salary, benefits and professional development upgrades.

The Board and Baker Education Association representatives agreed to a three-year contract in October 2016 with openers on three topics: salary and benefits, the school calendar, and professional development.

Under the District plan for the school calendar presented on March 20, teachers would work up to 191 contract days in 2017-18, according to a summary of the two proposals included on the District’s website at baker.k12.or.us.

That could include a four-day student week with “Enhanced Friday” programs during a Friday workday for teachers, the summary states.
