Bulldogs lose twice on Arizona trip

Baker baseball’s road trip to Arizona was anything but fruitful on the field Monday and Tuesday.

Monday, the Bulldogs dropped an 11-3 decision to Barry Goldwater High School in Scottsdale.

Then, Tuesday, Baker fell 10-0 to Scottsdale Christian Academy in five innings.

“Our bats were flat,” said Baker coach Tim Smith.

“Tuesday our bats were off again. We hit the ball at people and hit fly balls.”

Against Goldwater, Smith said pitcher Morgan Bennett threw well but didn’t get much offensive support.

“We didn’t give him any run support,” the Baker coach said.

What offense the Bulldogs did muster came in the final two innings when they scored all of their runs.

Sam McCauley and Mason Van Arsdall each had RBI doubles in the spurt.

“The kids battled at the end,” Smith said. “I liked that.”

Tuesday, Baker managed just two singles.

McCauley, Baker’s starter on the mound, also had an off day.

“Sam had some control issues and Scottsdale Christian took advantage of that,” Smith said.

“We just did not play well.”

Baker (1-2) plays Ketchikan High School Thursday at noon.
