Durkee (special) — Mrs. A.J. Hixon was seriously injured in a one car accident early Sunday morning. The car, driven by her daughter, Neva, struck black ice at the Meacham sign in the Blue Mountains and went out of control.

ONTARIO (AP) — Rivers were receding in Eastern Oregon today, but another storm making its way across the state threatened to bring more flooding.

Flooding in the Ontario and Burns areas forced dozens of residents from their homes last week.

March 21, 2008

A Baker High School choir and band are headed to state competition after qualifying at the district level Wednesday in Pendleton.

Bel Canto, the two-time state champion choir, placed first at districts. They will compete at state May 2 at George Fox University.

BHS’s symphonic band also received state qualifying scores, and will head to the state contest May 7 at Oregon State University.

Of 25 critical access hospitals in Oregon, only four made the top 100 in a recently released report.

Those four are Saint Alphonsus Medical Center-Baker City, Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande, Wallowa Memorial Hospital in Enterprise and Tillamook Regional Medical Center.

The list was released by The National Rural Health Association’s Rural Health Policy Institute, iVantage Health Analytics and The Chartis Center for Rural Health.

“It’s really a robust recognition,” said Phil Harrop, interim president at Saint Alponsus-Baker City.
