Four young persons in the junior high school age group in Baker have been cited into juvenile court from charges resulting from sniffing airplane glue, it was disclosed by reliable sources Wednesday afternoon.

City police and the county sheriff’s office have been alerted to rumors of glue-sniffing by youngsters of junior high and high school age level for over a month.

Snowpacks around Baker County should be enough to fill most rivers and streams this summer, according to the latest U.S. Soil Conservation Service statistics. The amount of water held in snow at 16 sites in Baker and Grant counties was 145 percent of average on March 2.

When she was in high school, Terry McQuisten’s first and favorite job was working at the Eltrym Historic Theatre.

As of Thursday, she and three others find themselves owning the historic Art Deco-style moviehouse. Together with Ron and Cindy Luelling, McQuisten and her husband Dan have purchased Baker County’s only movie theater from Rudyard Coltman.

More than 200 bulls and heifers were up for auction Monday at Harrell Hereford Ranch’s annual spring production sale at the ranch along Salmon Creek about eight miles west of Baker City.

Ranchers from across the West, and as far away as Virginia and Alberta, Canada, strolled from one stock pen to another to evaluate yearling and two-year-old Hereford bulls in preparation for the 12:30 p.m. bull sale.

Those cattlemen weren’t looking for just any bull.

“The customer base here is purebred customers,” said Ringman Scott Holt. “(They’re) coming to buy genetics to add to their herd — to make their own purebred herd better than it currently is.”
