Northeastern Oregon’s snowpack, which was more a matter of theory than a frigid reality just a few weeks ago, is beginning to bulk up.

A series of storms over the past week has boosted the snowpack to near average — and in a few places above.

Mountain snow is the biggest source of water for irrigation and recreation during the spring and summer.

But this winter will be especially important, as the region’s reservoirs and aquifers are depleted after four years of drought.

In late November the snowpack around the region was about half of average. As of this morning, based on measurements at 17 sites in the Grande Ronde, Powder, Burnt and Imnaha river basins, the water content in the snow was 88 percent of average.
