The wildly fluctuating weather that started before Thanksgiving in Baker City persisted through the weekend, bringing more record-setting warmth.

A warm front that moved from south to north Saturday evening ushered in unusually mild air from California.

The balmy air hung around through most of Sunday, pushing the high temperature to 62 degrees at the Baker City Airport. That easily eclipsed the record high of 58 for Nov. 26, a mark that had stood since 1950.

A cold front swept through around 7 p.m. Sunday, bringing a brief but heavy rain shower, and much cooler air. The temperature at the airport plunged from 57 at 6:53 p.m. to 43 an hour later, including a drop of 5 degrees in just five minutes.

The same weather pattern — warm front followed by cold front — led to the mildest Thanksgiving on record at the airport, when the temperature topped out at 70.

That wasn’t the only record set last week, though.

The low temperature on Nov. 22, the day before Thanksgiving, was 49. That’s the warmest low temperature for the date, and by a large margin — the previous record was 37 degrees, set in 1988.

In fact the low of 49 was actually warmer than the average high temperature for Nov. 22, which is 42 degrees.

The spring-like Thanksgiving weather was short-lived, though. A cold front moved through late on the holiday, and the high temperature the next day was just 51.
