First power streamed Sunday from Hells Canyon Dam — Idaho Power Company’s huge new hydroelectric project harnessing the Snake River in the rugged, mountain-locked heart of North America’s deepest gorge.

The 425,000-kilowatt project, climaxing the investor-owned utility’s three-dam complex for multi-purpose development of 100 miles of the Snake between Idaho and Oregon, officially began producing electricity when its first generator went “on the line” in a brief start-up ceremony.

Sometime next spring, Baker City will receive a brand new street sweeper.

It is an Elgin Crosswind brand street sweeper that will cost city taxpayers about a quarter of a million dollars.

The purchase is necessary for several reasons.

The City currently utilizes two street sweepers throughout the year. One of those is a 2004 Schwarze sweeper that has been used well beyond its 10-year lifespan.

“Standard replacement for a municipal sweeper is about seven years,” Public Works Director Michelle Owen said at a City Council meeting last month. “We’ve been stretching that to about ten … We’re well beyond that now. It’s time for a new one.”
