- Bulldogs shut down Mazama 7-0
Baker dominated Mazama in all aspects of the game Saturday, stopping the Vikings 7-0 in a Class 4A girls soccer play-in match at the Baker Sports Complex.
“The girls were just magnificent,” said Baker coach Kristen Rushton.
“We’ve been working on bringing out each players’ strength and they did that really well. It was just awesome to see the girls step up.”
The win sends the ninth-ranked Bulldogs to third-ranked Scappoose Tuesday in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. Game time had not been set in time for this story.
Defensively against Mazama, Baker totally shut down the visitors’ offense.
Baker keeper Emily Black stopped 31 shots.
“She was just awesome,” Rushton said.
Offensively, the Bulldogs spread the scoring around with four players putting the ball in the goal.
Sydney Younger got things started in the first half when she scored off a crossing pass in front of the goal.
Josie Ash then scored the first of her three goals when she stole a Mazama pass and scored with her left foot.
Kaitlyn Nelson was the next Bulldog to light the scoring column when she scored on a rebound of an Ash attempt.
Younger added her second goal late in the first half after another steal.
Ash completed the first-half scoring after receiving a pass from Emily Carter.
Ash then completed her three-goal “hat trick” early in the second half after taking a pass from Younger.
Carter then finished the scoring when she was wide open in front of the net.
