- By Kathy Orr for the Baker City HeraldBaker’s defense, shown earlier in the season, held Mac-Hi in check Friday.
Baker both won and lost on the football field at Mac-Hi Friday.
The Bulldogs earned a 26-8 Greater Oregon League win. But the Bulldogs won’t make the post season due to their placing in the OSAA rankings.
“It’s just the third time in my 16 years we haven’t been in the playoffs,” said Baker coach Dave Johnson.
Baker is ranked 24th which is good enough to advance to state. However, in the way the rankings are conducted two other third-place teams — Crook County of the Tri-Valley League and Newport of the Oregon West League — are guaranteed a state berth by playoff criteria.
Crook County is ranked 27th, and Newport 29th.
“It’s obviously disappointing,” Johnson said.
Against Mac-Hi, Alex Hammans ran for three touchdowns and Drew Story returned a fumble for another score.
“It was a good night again,” Johnson said.
“We ran the ball for about 200 yards again, the offensive line did its job again, and the defense was really solid.
“The challenge before the game was to duplicate what had happened last week against Ontario.”
Baker will close out its season Friday by hosting Madras in a nonleague game at 6 p.m. at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.
