Baker County will have a new “Queen Mother” Sunday, one whose life encompasses much of the early day history of the area.

She is Mrs. May Sturm of 2719 2nd street, who was born 80 years ago last May 11 at Winterville, near the old Bonanza mine.

One of America’s most celebrated aircrafts will spend this weekend at the Baker City Municipal Airport — and you can have a ride, if you’ve got the cash and the inkling.

A fully restored B-17 bomber, named Sentimental Journey, will be on display and available for rides.

On April 20 the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest announced its plan to log trees killed or weakened by mountain pine beetles in the southwest corner of Baker County starting in 2017.

But fire got there first.

The Rail fire, which started July 31, has burned 10,700 acres, most of them within the area slated for commercial logging and other work.

The proposed project the Wallowa-Whitman unveiled in April had the same name as the fire — the Rail project. The 30,000-acre project was designed to deal with the effects of a bark beetle epidemic.

The work, including cutting trees too small to be sold to mills, was intended to “reduce hazardous fuels and improve forest health while improving public and fire-fighter safety, and providing wood products to local economies,” according to an April 20 letter.
