Environmentalists have moved to stop the U.S. Forest Service from extending a 1.5-mile section of road into a roadless area on the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area.

The Oregon Natural Resources Council and Hells Canyon Preservation Council asked the Forest SErvice to halt construction of the Lord Flat Road pending appeal.

A pair of weekend lightning storms started more than a dozen fires across Baker County, but crews corralled most of the blazes relatively quickly.

They were aided in a few cases by helicopters and firefighters assigned to the county’s biggest blaze of the year, the 10,500-acre Rail fire, which has been burning since July 31 about 10 miles southwest of Unity.

The Rail fire grew by only about 400 acres over the weekend, which made it possible for managers there to reassign some resources, including helicopters, to help douse new fires, said Bernie Pineda, a spokesman at the Rail fire camp at Burnt River School in Unity.

The first bout of lightning crossed Baker County late Friday and early Saturday.

The second series of storms, which arrived Sunday morning, brought light rain as well as lightning.
