“Baker is the nicest place in the United States to spend a summer vacation” were the first words spoken by (Los Angeles) Mayor Norris Poulsen when interviewed today. Poulson arrived in Baker last Friday to begin a three-week vacation.

Controversy over a locked gate on Sullivan Road, 12 miles north of Halfway, could be turning ugly.
Carmelita Holland of Richland, who says the road provides the only suitable access to property she owns, plans to cut the gate’s lock at 10 a.m. Saturday. She insists the road is a public right-of-way and cannot be locked.

If she won the lottery tomorrow, Patty Trost says she wouldn’t stop driving school bus.
It’s that dedication to a job she loves that has earned her the honor of Oregon School Bus Driver of the Year. Trost received the award last month from the Oreogn Pupil Transportation Association. She was nominated by Bruce Flatt of La Grande, owner-supervisor of Mid Columbia Bus Co. The Burnt River School District has contracted with the company for bus service since 1995.

In spite of a fire scarred view that has changed the landscape for years to come, life goes on for the residents of Stices Gulch nearly a year after wildfire disrupted their lives.
“Life isn’t going to stop. You take a deep breath and go on,” said Linda Rohwer who lives in the forested rural subdivision about 13 miles south of Baker City.
That disruption included over a week of being evacuated from their homes as the fire descended upon the area last August.
One resident’s memories from that devastation nearly a year ago have faded.
