More than 500 people have donated money to Megan Louie and Shad Thomas, the parents of Dylan Thomas, the 7-year-old Baker City boy who died in an accident during the Miners Jubilee parade Saturday.

A GoFundMe account had raised $31,080 from 459 donors as of Friday morning.

A separate account set up at Community Bank, which includes more than $16,000 donated during Saturday night’s bull riding event in Baker City, has raised more than $25,700, said Jeff Hale, who is Megan Louie’s cousin and set up the GoFundMe account.

“Thank you, Baker City, for all you’ve done,” Hale said this morning. “I’m pretty impressed with Baker City. I don’t think you could get better support than (Megan) has received.”

Hale said local residents have also contributed enough meals to last the family through at least the end of August.

“It’s a big blessing,” he said.

Dylan, who turned 7 on Saturday, was riding on a Baker County YMCA float with several other children on a lowboy trailer with exposed tires just behind the section of the trailer where the kids were riding and spraying spectators with water guns.

Megan Louie told Boise TV station KTVB that her son, who was participating in his first parade, stepped on a tire and slipped between the tire and the trailer.

Baker City Manager Fred Warner Jr., who organizes the Shriners parade Aug. 5 in Baker City, said this week that he believes lowboy trailers will not be allowed in that parade.

Dylan’s father, Shad Thomas, told the TV station that Dylan “was just pure love and pure joy, pure happiness. He was — he was perfect.”

The GoFundMe account has brought donations from across the region.

Loreen Cadero, who donated $50, wrote:

“I read this story and my heart breaks. I frequently travel from Washington state to Colorado and I always stop in Baker City, Or. for gas and coffee. When I read the story I just wanted to give to your community family. God bless them.”

Bob & Terri Wright, who donated $100, wrote:

“We heard about this tragedy from the Boise YMCA and wanted to lend our support through a donation and our prayers. Our sincerest condolences.”
