A 7-year-old Baker City boy was killed in an accident during the Miners Jubilee parade Saturday morning in Baker City.

Dylan S. Thomas fell off a float and was struck by the rear wheels of a commercial motor vehicle, Police Chief Wyn Lohner said.

The accident happened around 11:17 a.m. at the intersection of Second Street and Court Avenue.

The parade was canceled, and drivers should avoid the area of the accident as emergency vehicles remain there.

No one else was hurt in the incident.

“Although all indications are that this was a tragic accident, the Baker County Major Crime Team, along with patrol units from the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and Baker City Police Department are working with District Attorney Matt Shirtcliff to thoroughly investigate the incident,” Lohner said in a press release. “Baker County Public Safety Chaplains are also on scene, along with Mental Health workers from New Directions Northwest. Prayers are appreciated for all involved.”

“It’s heartbreaking all the way around,” Lohner said.

A candlelight vigil for the boy is set for 8:30 tonight at the Courthouse, Third street and Court Avenue. Bathrooms will be available in the Courthouse.
