Perfect weather and a wide varied program of a Cowboy breakfast, kids parade, rodeo and a grand parade combined to give Baker a colorful and exciting Fourth of July.
The main parade yesterday, sponsored by the American Legion, saw a float entered by the Builders Supply win the grand sweepstakes trophy.

Cal Ransom of Richland was recently appointed to the Oregon Beef Council during its annual meeting. His appointment was effective July 1.
Ransom is a board member of the Oregon Dairy Farmers Association and past president of the Eastern Oregon Dairymen’s Association.

HAINES — Fifteen-year-old Alec Keith really has something to crow about this Fourth of July.
With another victory at the annual Haines Fourth of July rooster crowing competition, the Seattle teenager is now the five-time defending champion in his division.

The fireworks made the flashiest statement, as fireworks are wont to do, but Alita Arendell was equally impressed with the Fourth of July parade at Haines.
“I couldn’t even guess how many more people were there than normal,” said Arendell, president of Friends of Haines.
“Everything was bigger.”
Twice as big, in the case of the fireworks show.
Arendell said the announcer at the Haines Stampede Rodeo claimed the pyrotechnic display was the sixth-largest in Oregon this Independence Day.
“That’s a big accomplishment for the little town of Haines,” Arendell said.
