Lightning struck a house in at 2675 Ninth St. in Baker City, near the intersection with B Street, about 1:30 this afternoon. There was some smoldering in the north wall of the house, but the biggest effect was smoke damage in the home. Donna Brackin, who lives at 2690 Ninth St., across Ninth Street from the house that was struck, said she saw smoke coming from the front door of the house, but she did not see any flames. She said Jackie Hughes, who is renting the house, had been sitting on the front porch just before the lightning struck.
Brackin, who has lived in her home for 36 years, said she was inside when the storm hit.
“The thunder and lightning were just terribly close,” she said.
Elisabeth Munsell, who lives at the corner of Ninth and A streets, said she knows Hughes. Munsell said she could see Hughes from her home, and that Hughes appeared to be safe.
Munsell, who was in her home during the storm, said the thunder “was so loud I knew something had to have been hit.”
