The Elkhorn Summer Classic American Legion baseball tournament at the Baker Sports Complex this weekend had more twists and turns than a major league knuckleball.

The tournament, hosted by the Hodgson/Barley Brown’s Brewers, Baker’s Legion team, was scheduled to begin its three-day run with two pools and end Sunday with bracket play.

When several teams had to pull out of the tournament, the Baker organizers tried to put together a scaled-down version of the same format.

But at the last minute another team withdrew, leaving the field with just enough teams to play a round-robin style format, playing each opponent once. That meant each team would play five games.

That appeared to work until Saturday afternoon when two teams from Homedale were scheduled to play each other. Rather than have them play, Baker coach Al McCauley offered to have the Brewers step in and play an “exhibition” game against Homedale No. 1, a team Baker had lost to 6-0 in its opener. In Saturday’s game, Baker eked out an 11-10 win.

In Baker’s other Friday game, the Brewers lost 4-0 to Elko, Nevada.

In Baker’s other Saturday game, the Brewers fell 5-4 to Spring Creek.

Sunday, Baker defeated Homedale No 2, 12-2 in five innings, then edged the Bishop Kelly Barons 3-2.

In Friday’s game against Homedale No. 1, Baker managed just four hits, three by Sam McCauley.

Against Elko, the Brewers had just four singles.

In Saturday’s game against Homedale No. 1, Gage Hiatt had three RBIs, and McCauley two.

Against Spring Creek, the Brewers allowed all of the visitor’s runs in the fourth inning. Spring Creek scored all of its runs with two outs, on two hits, four walks and a hit batsman.
