Next week will be a busy one in Baker with a number of Fourth of July activities on the docket.

Whit Deschner thinks there’s art everywhere — even out on the range, among the salt licks.

Deschner’s idea is this: Ask local cattlemen to bring him the best-looking, most finely sculpted salt licks their cattle can create. He plans to show the best of the bovines’ tongue-created works at the Crossroads Art Center in October.

Nathan Hobson paid his entry fee for the 2016 Baker City Cycling Classic and will make the trip from Milwaukee as he has every June for the past 15 years.

Hobson, who grew up in Baker City, founded the stage race. It was originally named the Elkhorn Classic.

He’s not the promoter anymore — Brian Vegter now has that role.

But Hobson still comes with his group of 14 family and friends.

“This will be our 15th year — it’s something we all look forward to,” he said. “Sometimes we race, sometimes we don’t. We stay in hotels and we eat out every meal.”

And this — infusing the local economy with money from outside the area — is one of the reasons Hobson started the race.
