WASHINGTON (AP) — The Hells Canyon fight — the nation’s hottest private vs. public power row — may break out again in the Senate today.

A Hells Canyon bill was listed next on the Senate calendar after expected discussion of civil rights legislation.

Twenty-eight senators, mostly Democrats, are cosponsoring a bill to authorize a high federal dam in the Hells Canyon reach of the Snake River bordering Idaho and Oregon.

Referring to state voters the interpretation of Measure 37 and an increase in the cigarette tax to cover the health care needs of uninsured children may get legislators out of the Capitol by their self-imposed June 29 deadline.

But Senate Minority Leader Ted Ferrioli thinks there ought to be a better way to run state government than “ignoring the clear will of the voters.”

HALFWAY — The gym is a blur of red shirts and swinging ponytails, the room echoing with the loud encouragement of coaches as athletes practice essential skills of handling a basketball.

This year, 150 girls in Grades 5 to 12 participated in the 40th-annual Pine-Eagle Girls Basketball Camp June 13-17 in Halfway.

Chuck Peterson started the camp in 1976, and ran it every year until he retired. His daughter, Molly Smith, and her husband, Tim, have organized it for the past 13 years.

“Now we have daughters of players who went through when Dad was here,” Molly said.
