Baker’s Gracie Huggins placed fourth at the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state girls tennis tournament Saturday at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

The BHS senior’s placing is the highest any Baker tennis player has finished in school history.

Friday, the fourth-seeded Huggins defeated Crystal Peng of Delphian 6-0, 6-1, then topped Mia Friedman of Oregon Episcopal 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

In Saturday’s semifinals, Huggins lost 6-3, 6-2 to No. 2 seed Kate Keeney of Oregon Episcopal.

Then, in the match for third place, Huggins fell 6-3, 6-0 to No. 3 seed Courtlyn Lam of Klamath Union.

Huggins had reached the quarterfinals last year and had won the consolation finals as a sophomore.

Two Baker boys also competed at state during the weekend.

Zach Schwin lost his opening match 6-4, 6-3 to Nate Haslam of Philomath. Then, in consolation play, Schwin fell 8-2 to Jonny Gurney of Sisters.

John Cunningham lost his first match 6-0, 6-0 to No. 2 seed Kristian Peev of Valley Catholic. Cunningham then lost 8-5 to Jake McCafferty of Hidden Valley in consolation play.

Baker finished eighth in the girls team standings, and did not place in the boys standings.

Oregon Episcopal won both the boys and girls team titles.
