It took a week longer than anticipated, but Baker finally won the Greater Oregon League girls basketball regular-season championship Thursday.
The Bulldogs (5-0 in the GOL) defeated Mac-Hi 78-34 in the Baker gym to earn the crown.
Baker travels to Ontario today to complete the GOL regular season. The Bulldogs then host the GOL championship game Saturday, Feb. 18. The start time has not yet been determined.
Against Mac-Hi, Baker actually fell behind 8-0 to start the game.
“We hadn’t played in two weeks,” said Baker coach Mat Sand. “We knew we’d either come out flat, or come out and take it to them. We knew we’d settle down and play our game.”
That’s exactly what the Bulldogs did.
Consecutive baskets from Kaeli Flanagan, Gracie Huggins, Jayme Ramos and Sydney Younger, and a three-pointer by Ramos, gave Baker an 11-8 lead with 2:51 left in the first quarter.
Later, four points from Emily Carter, three from Younger and two from Huggins boosted Baker up 20-11 at the break.
Baker’s defense then took over in the second quarter. The Bulldogs outscored Mac-Hi 16-1 in the period to build a 36-12 halftime lead.
Mac-Hi was held without a field goal in the period.
Baker then outscored the Pioneers 42-22 in the second half.
Four Bulldogs scored in double figures led by Younger’s 13. Carter added 12, Flanagan 11 and Cecylee Bruce 10.
“I’ve been happy all year with our balanced scoring,” Sand said.
