- S. John Collins / Baker City HeraldBaker’s Kaylan Mosser heads for home Monday against Fruitland.
Baker’s softball team entered the week thinking it had six games on the schedule in the next six days.
How quickly things can change. By Monday afternoon the Bulldogs saw the week’s schedule shrink to just three games.
Baker was scheduled to host Fruitland in a doubleheader Monday, but Coach Al McCauley received word late Sunday that Fruitland had six league games this week and wanted to play just a single game.
So, that’s what happened Monday at the Baker Sports Complex, with Baker pulling out a 14-13 win in 9 innings.
Baker now will travel to La Grande Friday for a Greater Oregon League doubleheader.
Saturday’s non-league home twinbill with Homedale has been rescheduled for May 4.
Against Fruitland, Meagan Tool’s two-run walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth was the winning margin.
Baker built a 6-1 lead after one inning.
Natalie Nelson’s two-run double, an RBI double by Jordan Rudolph, an RBI single by Tool and a run-scoring walk by Kyra Davis did the first-inning damage.
Then, after Fruitland took an 8-7 lead in the top of the fifth, Baker regained an 11-8 edge in the bottom of the inning.
Consecutive doubles by Kaylan Mosser (driving in two runs), Ashlee Brinton and Michaela Watkins did the damage.
Fruitland then took a 12-11 lead in the top of the seventh before Gussie Cook’s solo home run in the bottom of the inning sent the game into extra innings.
Rudolph and Brinton each finished with four hits. Watkins, Tool and Nelson each added three.
