- Toddler who fell into pond back home, 'perfect and unharmed,' parents say
A Baker Valley boy who fell into a pond near his home on Thursday is back home today, “perfect and unharmed” according to his parents.Matty Cunningham, 22 months, “has made a miraculous recovery,” his parents, Matt and Elsa Cunningham, wrote in an email to the Herald this morning.Matty was dead when his mother, Elsa Cunningham, dove into the pond and pulled the toddler to shore, the Cunninghams wrote.“We immediately started CPR with Elsa doing chest compressions and me giving mouth to mouth resuscitation,” they wrote.Matty was taken by ambulance to St. Alphonsus Medical Center-Baker City, and later to St. Luke’s Hospital in Boise.“On Saturday the doctors were astounded by a ‘normal’ MRI,” the Cunninghams wrote. “After a couple days of forced sedations, they decided to allow Matty a chance to wake up by removing his drugged state. Matty opened his eyes and looked around, puzzled, and barked like a dog. It was the best thing we could have hoped for, as leading up to the accident he had been doing this often as we had a litter of puppies at our home.”The Cunninghams thanked everyone who prayed for his family in Baker City, which, they wrote, “has a heart of gold.”
