- La Grande stops Baker in opener
Baker picked the wrong night to have an off shooting night against La Grande Friday in the Baker gym.
The Bulldogs couldn’t get the ball to drop at key times throughout the game against the undefeated Tigers and fell 51-36 in the Greater Oregon League boys basketball opener for both teams.
“We just had a bad shooting night,” said Baker coach Brent Gyllenberg.
“I thought our intensity and grit were good. In the first half we did pretty well against the seventh-ranked team in the state.”
Five points from Wyatt Akers and four from Brad Zemmer helped the Bulldogs take an 11-7 lead after one quarter.
La Grande then rallied to build a 23-18 advantage at halftime.
The Tigers then scored the first seven points of the second half to complete a 10-0 run and increase their lead to 30-18 with five minutes left in the third quarter.
Baker never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Akers and Ryan Schwin led Baker with nine points each.
Baker travels to Mac-Hi Saturday in GOL play.
