Fruitland stops Baker in OT

It definitely wasn’t pretty, but still it almost turned into a victory for Baker Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs had two solid runs, one in each half, sending their nonleague boys basketball game with Fruitland in the Baker gym into overtime.

But Fruitland dominated the extra period and went on to defeat Baker 69-58.

Fruitland outscored the Bulldogs 16-5 in the overtime.

Baker had trailed by as many as nine points in the first half before rallying to take a 2-point lead twice late in the second quarter.

Baker then fell behind by as many as 15 points in the second half before again battling back to knot the game at 53-53 at the end of regulation.

Baker never led in the overtime period.

Fruitland scored the first seven points in the game, and led 18-11 after one quarter.

Baker then scored nine of the first 11 points in the second period — three points each by TJ Dunn, Brad Zemmer and Cayn Osborn — to tie the game at 20-20 with 4:09 left in the first half.

Two more Osborn three-pointers helped Baker take a 26-25 edge with 2:06 left in the half.

Fruitland then went on to take a 35-28 halftime advantage.

The Grizzlies continued to add to their lead in the second half, building it to as much as 47-32 with 2:30 left in the third period.

Baker then opened the fourth quarter on a 17-2 run to tie the game at 49 with 2:50 left in regulation.

Wyatt Akers led the way with six points, and Grant Berry added four.

Fruitland then regained a 53-51 lead before Akers scored on a rebound with 4.1 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Akers led Baker with 18 points. Osborn added 12, and Zemmer 10.

Baker split the non-varsity games, winning the JV game 54-48 and losing the JV2 game 59-44.

Baker opens Greater Oregon League play Friday when the Bulldogs host La Grande.
