- S. John Collins/ Baker City HeraldKaeli Flanagan, left, and Jordan Rudolph celebrate after Baker’s win over Douglas Saturday.
When Kourtney Lehman’s cross-court hit tucked itself into the back corner of Douglas’ side of the net Saturday it propelled Baker into the Class 4A state volleyball quarterfinals.
Lehman’s match-winning hit gave Baker a 25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 25-23 over the Trojans in the first-round match at Baker High School.
“That last shot by Kourtney, we work on that in practice,” said Baker coach Warren Wilson.
“She will ask me when and where to use it.”
Baker, the Greater Oregon League champion, and winners of 13 straight matches, will meet Crook County at 1:15 p.m. Friday at Forest Grove High School in its opening quarterfinal match.
A Baker win would place the Bulldogs in a semifinal match Friday at 8:30 p.m.
A Baker loss to Crook County would mean a consolation semifinal match Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Class 4A title match is set for Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
“I’m happy for the girls,” Wilson said Saturday.
“To be where we are we’re in the top 16 in Oregon. Everybody now is a good team.”
Against Douglas the Bulldogs trailed by as many as four points several times in the opening game.
Then, behind the serving of Jordan Rudolph, Baker pulled in to a 10-all tie.
The teams went on to tie at 11, 12, 15 and 16 before Baker’s Christian Maldonado came off the bench to serve the Bulldogs on top 19-16.
Then, after Douglas battled back to tie the game at 19, Kaeli Flanagan served Baker up 24-19.
A missed hit by Douglas ended the game.
Game 2 was close until Kaylee Burk and Desi Davis combined to serve Baker up 20-13.
Douglas got no closer than six the rest of the game, which ended on a Burk kill.
Baker hit a lull in the third game, trailing by as many as eight points.
Wilson noted that the Bulldogs missed three serves at key times in the match.
“That’s like giving away points,” he said.
Game 4 was similar to the opening game, with each team taking brief leads only to lose that lead.
Baker took its last lead at 21-20 and maintained a 1 or 2-point edge the rest of the match until Lehman’s winning hit.
Flanagan led Baker with 14 kills. Lehman added nine, Burk eight, Jayme Ramos three, Rudolph one and Carson Lien one.
Maldonado led the Bulldogs with 18 assists. Ramos added 17, Lien one, Burk one and Rudolph one.
