Bulldogs remain perfect in Greater Oregon League play

Baker girls basketball coach Mat Sand was worried Saturday before his team hosted Ontario in a Greater Oregon League contest.

Sand said he wasn’t sure what to expect from the Bulldogs after a long weather-related layoff.

“We hadn’t played, and didn’t practice,” Sand said. “I wasn’t sure how the team would react.”

Turns out Sand had little to worry about.

The Bulldogs scored the first dozen points of the game and went on to improve their GOL record to 3-0 with a 78-36 thumping of Ontario. The 78 points was the third time the Bulldogs had reached that season-high figure this season.

“The kids were ready to go. They were hungry,” Sand said. “I was happy with our all-around play. The girls did a good job running the floor, and working our transition game.”

Eight of Baker’s first 12 points came from the free throw line, including 6-of-6 from Gracie Huggins.

Huggins scored six points and Jayme Ramos, Kaeli Flanagan and Desi Davis two each as Baker built a 12-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Ontario finally scored with 3:48 left in the quarter, but Baker went on to take a 25-9 lead at the break.

Huggins added five points, and Flanagan four as the Bulldogs increased the margin to 39-14 at halftime.

Baker then bolted from the halftime locker room, outscoring the Tigers 23-6 in the third quarter.

Davis led the way with five points. Ramos, Calli Ward and Cecylee Bruce each added four points.

Baker’s defense held Ontario to just three free throws in the period until just 5.8 seconds remained.

Huggins led five Bulldogs in double figures with 18 points.

Ramos added 13, Bruce 11, Flanagan 11 and Davis 10.

Baker, 12-3 overall and ranked eighth in the Class 4A rankings, travels to Pendleton today for a nonleague game.
