- Baker wins GOL opener 41-36
Jayme Ramos hit back-to-back three-point baskets in the final minute Friday to lift Baker to a 41-36 win over La Grande in the Greater Oregon League girls basketball opener for both teams at BHS.
With Baker trailing 35-34, Ramos connected on a three-pointer to give Baker a 36-35 lead.
Then, after La Grande missed a shot with 44.4 seconds left, Ramos connected again from the deep right corner on a pass from Desi Davis.
“Jayme Ramos did a great job stepping up and hitting those shots,” said Baker coach Mat Sand.
Sand noted that the Bulldogs struggled most of the game, but did the job when needed.
“We were trying to find a rhythm,” Sand said. “You could tell the girls were nervous. Most of them had never played in varsity action in front of a bigger crowd.”
Sand said La Grande’s physical play also was a key for the Bulldogs’ struggles.
“The physical play kept us out of our rhythm,” he said. “But I’m proud of the girls for hanging in there.”
Five points from Gracie Huggins and four from Sydney Younger helped Baker edge ahead 14-10 after one quarter.
La Grande then outscored the Bulldogs 12-4 in the second period to take a 22-18 halftime lead.
Ramos hit a pair of three-point baskets as Baker opened the third period on a 10-2 run to take a 28-24 lead with 4:28 left in the quarter.
But La Grande answered to build a 32-28 edge at the break.
Baker’s defense then clamped down.
The Bulldogs allowed La Grande just four points in the fourth quarter, and just one field goal.
Baskets by Huggins, Ramos and Kaeli Flanagan helped Baker take a 34-33 lead with 4:52 left in the game.
Then, after La Grande scored its only basket to regain a 35-34 edge, Ramos hit her clinching three-pointers.
Ramos finished with 17 points, 14 in the second half.
Baker travels to Stanfield for a nonleague game Tuesday. The Bulldogs then visit Mac-Hi in GOL play Saturday.
