Propelled by gusty winds, the Rail fire in southern Baker County more than doubled in size Tuesday afternoon and evening, to an estimated 5,500 acres.
The fire also burned onto two small sections of private property, said Chuck Turley, a spokesman at the fire camp at Burnt River School. No buildings were damaged, and no residents were evacuated, Turley said.
Winds were calm this morning, and Turley said fire managers hope to take advantage of more favorable weather the next three days and “make good progress during that lull.”
