David Scrivner

Former Baker City resident, 1961-2016

David Arthur Scrivner, 54, a former Baker City resident, died June 22, 2016, at Clinton, Iowa.

Following his wishes, his cremains were returned to Baker City. There will be a private family service later at the family cabin.

David was born on July 9, 1961, at Prineville to Ernie and June Fisk Scrivner Bowen. He joined a family of two sisters and one brother.

Because of his father’s employment with the state Highway Department, the family moved seven times in his young life. They lived at Baker, Prineville, Bend, Boardman, The Dalles, Portland and then back to Baker.

David’s schooling was in Baker, which was very hard for him without today’s trade schools. He got out as soon as possible, but was always employed.

He worked on ranches, in garages and then at the E&E Mine in Bourne. He married Marie Nash in 1985. They were divorced about 1987.

He loved speed: riding his Harley, racing snowmobiles, cars, Jeeps, bikes and boats. He also loved camping, fishing, hunting and just being outdoors. He helped build a winning jet boat and made or improved other equipment.

After moving to Clinton, Iowa, he worked for machinery and trucking companies, delivering locally. He then began driving semis with trailers from coast to coast for his good friend, Dale Bachman of Edward Allen Trucking. He had found his niche.

He married Robin Johnson Brown in August of 2002 at Clinton and enjoyed being with her granddaughters and family.

He suffered from all the side effects of diabetes for many years but refused to take insulin, which would have prevented his ability to drive. He took and did everything else available to control the disease.

He still had a full life doing what he wanted to do. He will be greatly missed, his family said.

Survivors include his wife, Robin of Clinton, Iowa; a stepson, Steven Brown and his wife, Elizabeth; two granddaughters, Claudia and Ella Brown at home; his mother, June Bowen of Baker City; two sisters, Kathy Menser of Eagle Creek and Linda (Pat) Nagle of Estacada; a brother, Steven (Vicki) Scrivner of Grants Pass; and all the Scrivner uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends; and his Iowa family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ernie Scrivner; and stepfather, Bob Bowen.

Charlene Gordon

Baker City, 1942-2016

Charlene Dora Thompson Gordon, 73, of Baker City and a longtime resident of Eastern Oregon, died peacefully in her residence at Settler’s Park Assisted Living July 10, 2016, surrounded by her family and friends after a 25-year-long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Her memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2625 Hughes Lane. There will be a luncheon afterward.

Charlene was born on Aug. 2, 1942, at Jacksonville, Illinois, to Trevor and Charlotte Thompson. Charlene was the third oldest of nine children. She graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1959.

In 1960, Charlene gave birth to a son, Kenneth Trevor. On Dec. 16, 1961, Charlene married Jerry Ralph Gordon. They were married for 54 years.

During their marriage Jerry and Charlene had two children. In 1962, they welcomed a daughter, Debra Marie. Four years later, Jerry Jr. was welcomed into the family.

Charlene loved the outdoors, including hunting and fishing. When the opportunity presented itself you could often find her fishing for salmon with Jerry and other friends and family along the North Jetty at the mouth of the Columbia River.

This particular location on the Washington Coast held many special memories for Charlene, as she spent many vacations there with friends and family, including her children and grandchildren.

Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Charlene knew that she had the best sense of humor, and while Charlene was known by some to be a proper lady who would never dream of using a foul word or muttering anything deemed inappropriate, those who knew her best would say that she could swear like a sailor and tell the dirtiest of jokes. However, if anyone would point out either of these things, she would adamantly deny that it had happened.

More than being witty, Charlene held a multitude of talents, including a green thumb that allowed her to grow just about anything she put her mind to. It was well-known that she always had the most beautiful garden and flower beds on the block.

Baking and cooking in general was a special gift possessed by Charlene. She spent many years making beautiful cakes of all shapes and sizes, including wedding cakes for a number of family weddings and numerous other special occasion cakes.

Charlene was also praised for her pizzas that she made from scratch as well as other goodies she always made up for those she loved.

Charlene will be remembered as someone who could always make people laugh and who had a loving heart that touched everyone around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Trevor and Charlotte Thompson.

Survivors include her siblings, Treva, Terrence, Benita, Linda, Jonetta, Denise, Penny and Brent; her children, Ken, Debra and spouse Randy and Jerry Jr., eight grandchildren, Shannon, Ryan, Kyle, Matthew, Tabitha, Tahlia, Felicia and Kassidie; and six great-grandchildren, Karissa, Cameron, Micah, Porcia, Caedence and Braiden; and numerous other family members.
