- 2 officers hurt in arrest
Baker City Police Chief Wyn Lohner and Lt. Dustin Newman sustained minor injuries Thursday afternoon while arresting a man suspected of trying to sell marijuana to juveniles in Geiser-Pollman Park.
Miguel Guzman, 30, of 1107 Elm St., is being held at the Baker County Jail on five counts of attempted delivery of marijuana to a minor, resisting arrest and two counts of assaulting a public safety officer.
A second suspect, Chase Westcott, 21, of 2698 17th St., was released without being charged.
Lohner said today that officers could not verify that Westcott was involved in attempting to sell marijuana to the juveniles.
The incident began at 1:27 p.m. when police were called to the park. Officers talked with several juveniles there as well as an adult witness.
The witnesses gave police a description of two adult males. Newman and Lohner found Guzman and Westcott about 15 minutes later walking south on Elm Street near Eldon Street.
Guzman “immediately became agitated and refused to comply with orders,” according to a press release from the Police Department.
Lohner and Newman used “additional force” to handcuff Guzman, during which the two police officers received “minor injuries,” according to the press release.
Lohner said a scuffle began almost immediately when he and Newman caught up with the two men.
“Guzman instantly wouldn’t comply,” Lohner said.
Guzman, who stands 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 245 pounds, struggled with the officers as they tried to escort him to the chief’s unmarked car.
“He jumped up on the hood — straight up — and pushed backward,” Lohner said. “He carried us back and we got him to the ground.”
Lohner said he scraped his arms and Newman sustained a sprained finger while wrestling with Guzman.
