A 6-year-old North Powder girl is recovering in a Seattle hospital after her left leg was amputated just above the knee following a lawnmower accident Friday afternoon at her home.

Chelsie Thompson, the daughter of Colby and Erin Thompson, had a second surgery this morning at Harborview Hospital, said her aunt, Kristin Wilson, who is Colby Thompson’s sister.

The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Thompsons’ home on Bagwell Road, east of Interstate 84 about two miles north of North Powder.

Wilson declined to talk about the details of the accident.

The North Powder Quick Response Team responded to the 911 call, and the La Grande Fire Department took Chelsie by ambulance to Grande Ronde Hospital.

She was flown from there to the Seattle hospital, where her leg was amputated Friday afternoon, Wilson said.

Wilson said Chelsie was able to visit Sunday with her twin brother, Cash, and her two older siblings, sister, Jacee, 10, and brother, Cade, 8.

“She was so happy to see them,” Wilson said. “There were lots of smiles.”

Chelsie just finished kindergarten this spring.

Wilson said Chelsie probably will stay in Harborview Hospital for seven to 10 days, after which she will be transferred to another Seattle hospital to continue her recovery.

Barring complications she should be fitted with a prosthetic leg later this summer.

Wilson said Chelsie’s mother, Erin, has repeatedly talked about “how tough and how brave her little girl is.”

Chelsie did not suffer any other injuries in the accident, Wilson said.

An account has been set up at Community Bank to collect donations to help the Thompson family, Wilson said.

Burger Bob’s restaurant in Baker City also is collecting donations.

“It’s going to be a long road,” Wilson said. “She’s got great family and friends support.”
