Baker overcame sickness, weather and the Molalla Indians Wednesday to win a Class 4A baseball play-in game 5-1 at Molalla.

The Bulldogs (13-13 overall) next play on the road Wednesday against an opponent yet to be determined.

Baker coach Tim Smith said he had to shuffle his lineup around after four or five Bulldogs came down with flu-like symptoms.

“We had a little sickness going around,” Smith said. “We had a little Pepto in the dugout and I went with Draven Pearce for Dominic Yervasi at designated hitter.

“My gut paid off. Draven had two hits and an RBI,” Smith said.

Smith said Baker played a good ballgame defensively behind ace pitcher Trevor Bennett’s strong outing on the mound.

“We had a zero in the error column, and Trevor Bennett threw well,” Smith said.

Bennett threw a five-hitter, striking out eight and walking just two.

Smith said Baker had just five hits, but put the ball in play.

“It was windy and about 90 percent of the game was played in the infield,” Smith said.

“It was kind of weird. Offensively, we stayed on top of the ball in the weather. Defensively, Molalla didn’t execute and we did.

“I’m proud of the boys,” Smith said.
