- Kathy Orr/ Baker City Herald Bryson Smith lined a hit through the snowflakes Tuesday against New Plymouth.
Baker combined overpowering pitching, solid defense and timely hitting to overcome New Plymouth, Idaho, 9-0 in a wet nonleague baseball game Tuesday at the Baker Sports Complex.
In a steady rain/snow mix three Bulldog pitchers threw a three-hitter in the season-opening win.
Trevor Bennett earned the start, striking out nine and walking just one in four innings.
Draven Pearce and Brad Zemmer pitched in relief for the Bulldogs.
“I thought Trevor Bennett threw real well,” said Baker coach Tim Smith.
“And, Draven and Brad Zemmer came in and did a nice job as well.”
Smith said the trio threw just 93 pitches in the seven-inning game. They got first-pitch strikes on 15 of 22 New Plymouth hitters.
“We were working ahead in the count real well,” Smith said.
Baker’s infield defense committed just one error.
“Our infield defense was solid. We made the plays we needed to,” Smith said.
Baker managed just six hits, but got them at key times.
“They’d make an error, or we’d get a walk andthen we’d get a timely hit,” Smith said.
Bryson Smith and Mason Dowdy led the Bulldogs with two hits each.
Smith added two RBIs.
