LA GRANDE — The Baker softball team had its six-game winning streak snapped Monday as the Bulldogs opened Greater Oregon League play by losing both games of a doubleheader at La Grande.

Baker nearly rallied in the first game, losing 5-4.

La Grande dominated the second game, winning 14-3.

The day started well enough, with the Bulldogs (8-3 overall, 0-2 GOL) taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The first three Baker batters — Jordan Rudolph, Dani McCauley and Morgan Plumbtree — all walked.

Gussie Cook drove in Baker’s first run with a single.

Later in the inning Kaylan Mosser was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to earn an RBI the painful way.

La Grande scored a single run in the first, then took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the second.

Neither team scored over the next three innings.

La Grande extended its lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the fifth.

Baker then rallied in the top of the sixth.

McCauley led off with a double. Plumbtree followed with a single and Cook doubled. McCauley and Plumbtree both scored to narrow La Grande’s lead to 5-4.

But La Grande pitcher Madyson Bell got three straight outs to stifle the Baker rally. Bell struck out 12 Baker batters.

Plumbtree, who earned the loss in the circle, struck out four and allowed eight hits.

The nightcap was a much different affair, as La Grande never trailed.

The Tigers scored eight runs in the second inning, and Baker, which had eight hits, six of those singles, never threatened.

Rudolph had both of Baker’s extra-base hits, a pair of RBI doubles.

La Grande scored five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game by 10-run rule.

Baker will try to even its GOL record Friday when the Bulldogs travel to Ontario for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. PDT.
