Ted Sorensen Jr.Ted Orsen Sorensen Jr. , 46, of Haines, died Sept. 14, 2011, at his home. His memorial service was Oct 1 at the Wallowa Assembly Church in Wallowa. Ted was born on June 6, 1965, at Gresham to Ted and Rosemarie Dhone Sorensen. He was a 1983 Wallowa High School graduate and he graduated from culinary school in Portland. Ted was a caregiver and he loved helping and caring for people, his family said. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, and crafts. Survivors include his father, Ted Sorensen Sr., and his wife, Ann, of Wallowa; son, Cody McCrae of Island City; sister, Sharon Annette Young of Haines; brother, Stanley E. Sorensen and his wife, Sara, of Salem; brother, Shane R. Sorensen of Salem; stepsister, Leisa Prince and her husband, Rocky, of Wallowa; stepbrother, Charles Graham of Enterprise; and numerous nieces and nephews .He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosemarie Sorensen. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Avenue, Baker City, OR 97814.Bette ElskampBette Elskamp, 87, of Portland, a Baker City native, died Sept. 19, 2011, at her home surrounded by her daughters and granddaughter. She was born on March 7, 1924, to Delbert and Cleo Hines. She was a 1942 Baker High School graduate. She married Samuel Elskamp and they owned and operated Peerless Dry Cleaners in Baker City. They had three children: Jim, Denese and Sammye. Bette had a long career with US Bank that began when she worked as a teller in Baker City. In 1973, her career took her from her hometown to Portland. As product management officer for retirement products, she traveled extensively in the US Bank system, training employees on individual retirement accounts (IRAs). She was instrumental in drafting Oregon regulations for IRAsAfter retiring in 1989, she was honored her peers in 2009 at the annual US Bank Alumni Banquet as the most beloved retiree. She remained in Portland after her retirement. You could frequently find Bette around a bridge table, yelling at the TV during a college football game or tending her flower gardens, her family members said. She also played an active role at her retirement community, Summerplace, serving on the Association Board in various leadership roles. She was an avid bowler in her earlier years. Her greatest pride and joy was her family and she always enjoyed spending time with them.”She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her,” her family said. Survivors include her daughters, Denese Clark (Bruce) and Sammye Sanborn; grandchildren, Chris Elskamp (Paula), Michele Cooper (Rick), Ian Clark, Jake Sanborn, Samuel Sanborn and Jessie Merrick; several great-grandchildren; and loving friends, Glenda Cole and Kate Bohn. She was preceded in death by her son, James “Jim” Elskamp, who died in August of this year. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Baker Elks Scholarship Fund.
