Alice Cole

Alice Marie Cole, 87, died July 4, 2010, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Joy Cole, in Richland.

Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Pine Valley Presbyterian Church in Halfway. Friends are invited to join the family for a reception afterward at the Presbyterian Fellowship Hall. Interment will be later at Joseph.

Alice Marie was born on Sept. 19, 1922, at Caruthers, Calif., to August and Mary Eberlein Winter. Alice’s parents had escaped Russia during the revolution, going through Germany then to the U.S. via Ellis Island.

The family settled and farmed at Reedley, Calif., where they raised three sons, Bill, Ed and Al, and two daughters, Alice and Betty.

She married Robert Cole on April 4, 1941, at Reno, Nev. They had three sons: Robert, Ronald and Terry. Alice and Bob made their home at Joseph. Alice enjoyed being home, raising her boys and later went to work as a waitress at the Joseph Hotel.

Alice was very involved in the Joseph community and attended the Grace Lutheran Church. She served as president in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, American Legion, Grange, and Toastmasters, and was lovingly known by many as “Shorty.”

She also enjoyed helping with the Senior Meals at Joseph and working at the Wallowa County Museum. Later when Alice was in her 70s, she drove fuel truck for a helicopter company that was stationed in Halfway.

In 2000, Alice moved to Halfway to live with Bob and Joy Cole, and then these last years with them at Richland.

Survivors include sons, Robert “Bob” and wife, Joy Cole, of Richland, Ronald and Virginia Cole of Medical Springs, and Terry and Elizabeth Cole of Joseph; grandchildren, Scott Cole, Chad Cole, Bill Cole, Alice Cole and Mariann Cole, and Shelley O’Brien; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Jacqueline, Linden, Noah, Luke, Katie and Todd; and four great-great-grandchildren, Gage, Elijah, Athena and Alex.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, who died in 1988; grandson, Brian J. Deardorff; and brothers, Bill and Ed.

Daniel Arritola

Daniel Richard Arritola, 63, died July 9, 2010, of lung cancer.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1250 Hughes Lane. Refreshments will be served afterward at the Nazarene Church Family Life Center.

There will be a second funeral at 10 a.m. PDT Saturday at the Jordan Valley Grade School Gymnasium in Jordan Valley. Interment will be at the Jordan Valley Cemetery. There will be a reception afterward at the Catholic Church parish hall in Jordan Valley.

Dan was born on October 22, 1946, at Jordan Valley to Paul and Felisa Madariaga Arritola. He spent his childhood ranching in Jordan Valley. In 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He then married the love of his life, Mary McKay on Sept. 19, 1970. Over the next 10 years, the couple had four kids: Trina, Pete, Cecilia and Martin.

They continued ranching in Jordan Valley until the spring of 1993, when they moved to Baker City. Later that fall they opened Oregon Trail Livestock Supply, and have continued in that business until the present time.

Dan remained passionate about ranching throughout his life. One of his favorite things was branding calves. He was a good hand with a reata, and valued the traditions that went along with that. These were taught to him by his uncle, Rich, and it was important to him to pass it on to the next generation.

Dan loved sports, especially high school basketball. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. While operating the store, he loved that he could continue to work with ranchers and agricultural people.

Dan liked spending time with family. He had nine grandkids who could always bring a twinkle to his eye. Anyone who knew Dan knew he had a great sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Arritola; four children, Trina and her husband, Dave Riley, Pete and his wife, Charlotte Arritola, Cicilia and her husband, Roland Awusie, and Martin and his wife, Amber Arritola; his grandkids, Micaela Riley, Lane Riley, Alana Riley, Holly Arritola, Jace Riley, Casey Arritola, Faith Arritola, Claire Riley, and Blake Arritola; brother, Paul Arritola; sisters, Marie Kershner, Rosie and her husband, Frank Pinkela, and Joanne and her husband, Mike Odiaga.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Felisa Arritola; sister, Patricia Arritola; and brother-in-law, Dick Kershner.

John Hoskins

John Earl Hoskins, 69, of Baker City, died July 9, 2010.

There will be an informal gathering to celebrate John’s life from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Coles Tribute Center, 1950 Place St.

John was born on May 6, 1941, to G.J. and Elizabeth A. Lane Hoskins at Grass Valley, Calif. John grew up next to Sequoia National Park in rural California and spent his youth hiking and fishing the high Sierras, where according to friends, he could “out-hike anybody.”

He lived for 10 years in Minnesota prior to moving to Baker City in the fall of 1975. His life’s work was in social services and helping others in alcohol and drug recovery as he worked as a program manager for Baker House of New Directions Northwest Inc.

John was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, with a passion for steelhead.

“He will be sorely missed,” his family said.

Survivors include his wife; four children; one stepdaughter; five grandchildren; one stepgrandson; one great-grandchild; and many people whose lives were profoundly affected by their time with him.

Edward Calder

Edward Lee Calder, 58, of Baker City, died July 10, 2010, at his home.

Plans for a celebration of Edward’s life will be announced later.

Ed was born on June 27, 1952, at Baker City to Harold and Opal Chrissman Calder. He attended Baker High School until he was 17. He then joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany and Vietnam.

He later returned home and married Cynda Mikesell. The couple had two children: a daughter, Tammy, and a son, Bucky.

Ed tried doing carpenter work with his dad but he was just was not happy doing it. He then worked in the woods as a knot bumper and a skidder operator.

After a few years, he moved up to a truck driver. He drove for several different companies.

He worked until the 1990s when his health began to fail. He had a long battle with problems caused by Agent Orange, which he came in contact with in Vietnam.

Ed loved the outdoors, whether he was fishing, hunting or just exploring the country.

Survivors include his wife, Cynda; his daughter, Tammy, and her husband, Tom Marr, of Tri-Cities, Wash.; son, Buck, and his wife, Tammy, of Baker City; two grandsons, Christian and Jonathon of Utah; a granddaughter, Destini, of Baker City; a stepgrandson, Jesse Starr; a brother, Ronn Calder of Baker City; a brother-in-law, Lee Wilson of Baker City; three sisters-in-law, Sharon, and her husband, Bruce White, of Tri-Cities, Wash., Verna Calder of El Sobrante, Calif., and Nikki of Pendleton; Aunt Dorothy Datson of Walla Walla, Wash.; and many cousins, nephews and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold “Buck” and Opal Calder; his sister, Sue Wilson; and a half-brother, Tommy Calder.

Martina Fox

Martina A. Fox, 72, of Baker City, died July 6, 2010, at Baker City.

Her graveside memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the veterans section of Mount Hope Cemetery. There will be a celebration of her life at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, 2005 Valley Ave.

Martina was born on June 21,1938, at Ontario. She was the daughter of Ethel and Glen Troyer.

She moved to Baker City in 1943, and spent the next 25 years growing up, her family said. She married at 17 and had five children.

At the age of 30, she moved to Germany with her husband, James C. Fox, with an additional five stepchildren in tow. Cooking, cleaning and caring for 10 children is a testament to her determined nature.

Many moves and years later, she and Jim returned to Baker City where they both were very active members of the Baker City Elks Lodge. These years were happy ones, for both of them.

She was a grandmother to six boys and two girls and just recently became a great-grand-mother for the third time.

She was a petite woman who, despite her small stature, was a force of will; she lived life on her terms and lived it fully, her family members said.

“She taught her children by example that under any circumstances, good or bad, to put one foot in front of the other and to just keep walking,” they said.

She will be missed by her family and many friends and will join her husband, James C. Fox, who died on Feb. 15, 2010.

Survivors include her children, Glenda O’Connor, Mark Fox Sr., Terry Hayes-Sanders, Sherry Cisna, Autumn Fox, and stepson, Charles Fox; her grandchildren, Mark, Ben, Levi and Joe Fox, Amanda Rupel, Jennifer Cisna, Spencer Hayes and Logan Perkins; great-grandchildren, Alexis and Aden Rupel and Gabrile Fox; her sister, Rosie Proffitt; and lifelong friends, Shirley Manion and Carol Anderson.

Thomas Weems

Thomas Riley Weems, 69, a former North Powder resident, died Nov. 21, 2009, at his home in Veneta.

At his request, his body was cremated. His graveside funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the North Powder Cemetery. There will be a reception for family and friends afterward at the North Powder Grange Hall.

Tom was born on March 18, 1940, at Flagstaff, Ariz., to Evelyn and Clyde Weems. He worked as a welder.

In the early 1960s he worked on the Glen Canyon Dam in northern Arizona. He later worked throughout California, Washington, Oregon and Alaska.

He moved to North Powder in the early 1980s. He so loved the country that he decided to stay on. He loved hunting and fishing in Eastern Oregon.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years; his four sons and two daughters; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister.

‘Ben’ Salisbury

Harold Benton “Ben” Salisbury, 79, of Sandy, a former Baker City resident, died July 4, 2010.

There will be a celebration of his life at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Sandy Funeral Home.

Ben was born on April 26, 1931, at Colorado Springs, Colo., to Ella Mae Pilkington Salisbury. He attended Baker High School and was a 1949 BHS graduate.

He married Clara Ruth Leum on May 12, 1951, and soon afterward joined the U.S. Air Force. He and Clara were stationed at Amarillo, Texas, where they started a family.

In 1955, Ben and Clara returned to Oregon where Ben worked for Reynolds Aluminum at Troutdale. After a few years there, Ben became partners with his stepfather, Victor Baert, in operating Baert’s Metal Products, a steel fabrication business at Gresham.

They moved the business to Sandy in 1970. Ben retired in 1987.

His wife, Clara, died in 2006. His son, Steven Michael, died in 1999.

Ben loved hunting and fishing, traveling in his motor home and barbecues with his friends.

Survivors include his son, Mark Salisbury of Gresham; daughter, Debbie Halvorsen of Sandy; and stepsister, Shirley Taylor of Cove.
