‘E.J.’ Johnson

Erik David “E.J.” Johnson, 49, of Baker City, died March 29, 2010, at his home.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Baker City Church of the Nazarene, 1250 Hughes Lane.

Erik was born on Eastern Sunday, April 17, 1960, at Baker City. He attended St. Francis Academy, Baker Junior High and Baker High School, graduating in 1978. He attended the University of Oregon at Eugene, graduating in 1982 withdegrees in health and math.

Upon graduation, Erik began his teaching career at Roseburg. In 1985 he returned home to teach at Baker High School. This year was his 25th year teaching at the high school.

Erik’s lifelong passion was teaching and coaching. He loved all his “kids” and spoke of the constant rewards he received working withthem daily.

His love for coaching was as strong as it was for teaching. He coached his entire tenure at the high school. Erik was the head track coach from 1987 to 2005. Heserved as head basketball coach for two years andassisted in coaching football every year and had added baseball in recent years.

In his free time, Erik spent most holidays with his family. He was the favorite uncle who visited all the nieces and nephews and offered tremendous support whenever and wherever it was needed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, H. B. “Bard” and Yvonne Johnson Hochbrueckner; stepfather, Thomas Hochbrueckner; brother, Paul Johnson, and sister, Shelley Powell, sister-in-law, Ruth Johnson, and brother, Christopher Johnson.

Survivors include his brother, Scott Jonsson and his wife, Maggie; sister, Diane Walmer and her husband, John; niece, Katie Broweleit and husband, Matthew; niece, Kara Afshar, and her husband, Salim; nieces, Erin and Laura Walmer, Annie Jonsson, and Cassie Powell;nephews, Alex and Matt Jonsson, Erik Johnson and CadenPowell;great-nieces, Annabelle and Elizabeth Broweleit; and great-nephew, Andrew Broweleit.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Baker High School in honor of Erik Johnson.

‘Clara’ Hutchinson

Lucy Clara Hutchinson, known as “Clara,” 89, died March 30, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Health Services.

Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Gray’s West and Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave. There will be a reception afterward at Gray’s West and Co.

Clara was born to Fred and Alice Shepherd Hall on Feb. 5, 1921, in Southern Pines, N.C.

She married Charles “Eldon” Hutchinson in 1941. Clara was a homemaker and artist, and enjoyed watercolor painting and gardening.

Survivors include two daughters, Sherry Greulich of Beaverton and Pamela Enstad of Edmonds, Wash.; and two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon.
