Crane, Imbler, Griswold, Mohawk girls advance

Crane, Griswold, Imbler, and Mohawk advanced to the championship semifinals at the Class 1A state girls basketball tournament Wednesday at Baker High School.

In Wednesday’s quarterfinals, Crane defeated McKenzie 51-44, Griswold topped Jewell 65-49, Imbler edged Country Christian 39-32, and Mohawk edged Adrian 44-38.

McKenzie defeated Jewell 66-31, and Country Christian eliminated Adrian 69-53 Thursday morning in consolation semifinal action.

Wednesday quarterfinals

Crane 51, McKenzie 44

Crane withstood a fourth-quarter McKenzie rally to advance.

Crane led 45-30 after three quarters, but McKenzie scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter to pull within 45-42 with 1:54 left in the game.

Neither team scored from the field after that. Crane made 6-of-8 free throws, and McKenzie 2-of-2 the rest of the period.

Crane used four points each by Natalie Bentz and Hannah Buermann to build a 13-7 lead after one period.

Brenda Otley then tallied six points, and Bentz four as the Mustangs increased their lead to 28-20 at halftime.

McKenzie stayed close by hitting 5-of-7 three-point shots in the first half.

Bentz hit a pair of baskets, Emilee O’Toole a three-pointer, and September O’Crowley a basket as Crane went on a 9-0 run in the third quarter on the way to a 45-30 lead at the break.

Five points by Brittany Anderson, a three-pointer by Taya Harbick, and baskets by Jessie Hiddleston and Karissa Harbick helped McKenzie cut the deficit to 45-42 with 1:54 left.

Bentz led Crane with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Otley added nine points, O’Crowley eight and O’Toole seven.

Karissa Harbick topped McKenzie with 20 points. Anderson added 17.

Griswold 65, Jewell 49

Griswold withstood a large Jewell rally to run away with the win.

Chyanne Hack scored 10 points, and Claire Ely seven as the Grizzlies built a 22-10 lead after one quarter.

Amber Meier then scored eight points in a 10-0 Jewell run that cut the deficit to 25-20 midway through the second quarter.

Six points by Angel Ulm, and another basket by Meier, pulled the Bluejays even at 28-28 with 1:47 left in the first half.

A basket by Hack, and a three-pointer by Ely with 1.5 seconds left gave Griswold a 33-28 halftime lead.

Jewell cut the deficit to 35-34 early in the third period with a 6-2 opening run.

Griswold then ran off 11 unanswered points to pull away.

Hack led the Grizzlies with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Ely added 16 points, and Meghan Schroeder 12.

Meier topped Jewell with 21 points. Ulm added 13 points, and Jesika Kaczenski 11.

Imbler 39, Country Christian 32

Top-ranked Imbler led from start to finish but couldn’t shake Country Christian.

A balanced offensive attack helped Imbler build an 11-4 lead after one period.

The Panthers then increased the cushion to nine points, 13-4, before Country Christian rallied.

Country Christian chipped away at the deficit until Heather Cunningham hit two free throws with 1:26 left in the first half to pull within 16-15.

Imbler led 18-17 at halftime.

The Panthers then increased their lead back to 25-17 behind three points from Sarah Bowers-Ott and baskets by Chelsea Poe and Demetria Thompson.

Imbler led 27-21 after three periods.

Five points by Cunningham helped Country Christian cut the deficit to three points twice early in the fourth quarter. But each time Imbler answered.

Bowers-Ott led Imbler with 12 points.

Cunningham topped Country Christian with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Unranked Mohawk broke a 36-all tie with 4:13 left in the game and went on to upset fourth-ranked Adrian.

Clancee Lance hit a three-point basket with 3:43 left to give Mohawk the lead for good.

Emily Gonzalez led Mohawk with 24 points and seven rebounds.

Ranea Orosco led Adrian with 11 points.

Taya Harbick led four McKenzie players in double figures with 19 points. She also had six steals.

Brittany Anderson and Rachele Mark each added 11 points, and Karissa Harbick 10.

Amber Meier and Tessa Brooks each scored seven points to lead Jewell.

Ashley Axmaker and Heather Cunningham combined for 59 points to lead Country Christian to the win.

Axmaker scored 30 points, including 16-of-17 from the free throw line. Cunningham added 29 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Letizia Bordoli led Adrian with 17 points and five steals. Andrea Shenk added 10 points.
