Oregon author Molly Gloss is coming to Baker City as the featured
presenter at Literary Night, which begins at 7 p.m. Friday at
Crossroads Carnegie Art Center, 2020 Auburn Ave.
Gloss will talk about, and read excerpts from, her most recent book, “The Hearts of Horses.”
This novel is set in Eastern Oregon and tells the story of a young
woman who finds work breaking horses during the final years of World
War I.
An earlier book – “The Jump-Off Creek” about a single woman homesteader – established Gloss’ fan base years ago. On Friday she will talk about her other novels as well as her newest release.
Her other works are: “Wild Life”; “The Dazzle of Day”; and “Outside the Gates.”
On her Web site, www.mollygloss.com, the author recounts her path to becoming a writer.
It started with motherhood.
“Motherhood isn’t trivial; its activities may be trivial, but they put you in touch, deeply and immediately and daily, with the great issues of life: heavy duty things like Love and Loss, Growth and Tolerance and Dignity, Control and Conflict and Power – which are the issues, incidentally, that make serious novels,” she said.
“I might have become a writer eventually without first having become a mother, but it’s hard for me to imagine it.”
