Hardrath second at Canyon City

CANYON CITY Jason Hardrath finished second at the 2008 5K Gold Rush Run June 7 at Canyon City.

The former Baker High School runner, who recently completed his freshman year at Corban College, finished the race in 18:37, just 14 seconds behind two-time winner Daniel Soupir of Prairie City.

Barry Dew of Baker City placed sixth overall with a time of 20:12. He earned a commemorative silver coin for being the first male finisher age 40 and over.

Baker City’s Kaycie Kitzmiller was 24th with a 28:28 clocking, and Gayle Hammond 47th with a time of 45:41.

The race, part of the ’62 Days festival, drew a field of 66 runners, the most in more than 20 years.

Little League seeks tourney help

Wade Williams Elks Memorial Field will be the site of the annual District 3 Little League 9-10-year-old baseball tournament June 28 through July 2.

Tournament organizers are seeking volunteer help for scorekeepers, announcers, umpires and field crew.

Spartan softball players honored

HALFWAY Four Pine-Eagle softball players received all-league honors recently after a vote of league coaches.

CeAira Marks was named second team outfielder, and Olivia Gotzman second team second base.

Utility player J.P. Pallan and catcher Sam Millhouse received honorable mention.

Stephens picked for 1A game

LA GRANDE Powder Valley’s Michael Stephens will play for the East June 21 at the 19th annual Oregon 8-man All-Star Football Classic.

The classic will kick off at 2 p.m. at Eastern Oregon University.

Stephens, who played running back and linebacker at Powder, also has been selected for the annual East-West Shrine All-Star Football Game Aug. 2 at Bulldog Memorial Stadium in Baker City.
