Mary Erwin

Mary Erwin, 92, of Baker City, died April 15, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Care Center.

There will be a celebration of her life at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Extension Building, 2610 Grove St.

She was born in the Fort Stockton area at home in Leon Spring, Pecos County, Texas, to Joseph Franklin and Allie Alice Moss Teague. She was the youngest of three children. Her mother was killed and buried on her first birthday.

Six years later, her father married Cynthia Emily Campbell. They had five children. Mary attended school at Cap Rock, Texas.

In 1929, she married Allen Preston Birdwell. They had five children, all of whom were born in Texas.

When World War II started, she became an Air Force nurse whose job was to care for returning soldiers. Her first husband died in October of 1950.

She moved to Bend in January of 1951 and later moved to Madras. She married Asa Burl Erwin in 1955 and they moved to Baker City in 1956. Mary worked as a nurse and also ran many different restaurants. She was a great cook and she loved to make quilts, which have won many awards.

Her second husband died on May 30, 1975. In her later life, she loved to do handcrafts and to redo dolls. She also loved life and her family and friends.

Survivors include three sisters, Jean Cummins, Maude Epps and Gerniva Carruth; her daughter, Elizabeth Hick and her four children, Carla Sue, Tammy Kaye, Dwayne and Gerald Don, all of Texas; her son, Gerald D. andquot;Jerryandquot; Birdwell and his wife, Dru, and their daughter, Liegh Ann, all of New Mexico; grandchildren, Carol Drye and Mickey Hoover, James, Bill and Bob Short, Nita Dunbar and Kaye Grensky, all of Oregon, B.J. Forester and his sisters, Linda and Phylis, all of New Mexico and Texas; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren from many different parts of the United States; her friends, Lester O. Short and his two sons, Larry E. Short and Calvin L. Elliot; her sister-in-law, Ruth Erwin; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and three children, Allie Jo Hoover, Alveen Forester and Marion Eunice Birdwell Short Firkins; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Mildred Short; three sons-in-law; and a stepdaughter, Joan Smith.

Marcie White

Marcie N. White, 36, of Baker City, died April 15, 2007, at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise.

Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2625 Hughes Lane. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Bishop David Richards of the Second Ward will officiate. Friends are invited to join the family after the service for a reception in the fellowship hall.

Visitations will be until 5 p.m. today at Gray’s West andamp; Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave.

Marcie was born Nov. 2, 1970, at Laramie, Wyo. She came to live in Sumpter in 1979. She grew up in Sumpter as a young girl and then later moved to Baker City. She was a 1989 Baker High School graduate.

She married Robert White in 1996. They had two children, Darlene, 15, and Robbie, 10.

Marcie was a loving and caring daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, and friend.

She enjoyed fishing, reading, spending time with friends and family, and watching her children, nieces, and nephews play sports. Marcie always had time for others and made everyone feel loved and welcome.

Marcie was employed in several jobs throughout the years. She had worked at Albertsons and Marvin Wood Products and cared for people with mental handicaps and Alzheimer’s disease.

Survivors include her husband, Robert White of Baker City and their children, Darlene and Robbie; her father, Harold R. Corr; mother, Darlene C. Corr; brother, Harold L.; and three sisters, Leona, Teresa and Jeannie; many nieces and nephews; and one great-niece and two great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, James G. Ford, Mary M. Ford and Harold V. Corr.

James McClurg

James W. McClurg, 80, of Baker City died April 10, 2007, at his home with his family at his side.

There will be no service. Private family interment will be scheduled later.

James was born Jan. 26, 1927, at Richland to John Henry and Constance M. Bogart McClurg.

He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He worked for 17 years at Burnt River Sawmill and then was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. He retired in 1989 after a 25-year career with the post office.

He married Dolores Davis on May 8, 1949, at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral.

He was preceded in death by a son, David W. McClurg; a grandson, Sam McClurg; his father, John McClurg; and his mother, Constance Shoners.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores, of 58 years; his daughters, Mary Centre, and her husband, Marvin, of Bishop, Calif., and Laurie McClurg of Baker City; sons, John McClurg, and James and his wife, Mary, all of Baker City, and Paul McClurg of Big Piney, Wyo.; grandchildren, William Centre of Bishop, Calif., JovAnna Centre of Walla Walla, Wash., Timothy Nguyen and Justin McClurg, both of La Grande, Lana Nguyen of Baker City, and Kriptal and Sarah Dennis of McMinnville; and great-grandchildren, Richard and Gwen Centre of Bishop, Calif.

Coles Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
