- The Ingersoll - Sergeant steam driven air compressor (left) sits at the Cracker Creek Mining Museum in Sumpter. It was built in 1896 and used in a John Day area mine to powered jackhammers and air driven hoists. (Baker City Herald/Alex Pajunas).
The Sumpter Dredge State Heritage Area remains open while the dredge itself undergoes repairs. Also of interest in Sumpter: Though the dredge is the most obvious mining apparatus in Sumpter, another site is aiming to preserve and restore the other types of mining that played a major role in the development of this town.
The Cracker Creek Museum of Mining is located on the right side of the highway as you enter Sumpter, and pays tribute to the gold that was extracted with hard rock mining.
The museum is a self-guided tour right now, but future plans include outdoor equipment displays, a restoration shop, and a building of Mining History and Technology that will feature interpretive exhibits themed around hard rock mining.
