Weiser hands Bulldogs 40-0 defeat

WEISER, Idaho The Weiser Wolverines scored 26 first-half points Friday on the way to a 40-0 non-league football victory over Baker. It was the season-opener for both teams.

Weiser used scoring runs by quarterback Sam Lancaster and running back Bryce Svedin, a Lancaster-to-Bobby Hopkins scoring aerial, and a Jacob Scarbrough fumble return to lead the Bulldogs 26-0 at intermission.

Baker managed just 19 total yards in the first half, and had just one first down in the half.

Baker coach Dave Johnson was out of town during the weekend and not available to comment for this story.

Baker will host DeSales, Wash., at Bulldog Memorial Stadium Friday at 7 p.m. Baker nipped the Fighting Irish 15-14 at Walla Walla a year ago.

Baker kickers win two of three at jamboree

Baker won two of three andquot;miniandquot; games at the Bulldog soccer jamboree Saturday at the Baker Sports Complex.

Baker coach Jeff Wise said the Bulldogs played exceptionally strong defense, led by Mike Benintendi, Zack Robinson, and Jimmie Schmeits, although many others greatly contributed.

Riverside 2, Baker 0

Despite strong play, and numerous shots by the Baker offense, the Bulldogs lost 2-0 to Riverside.

However, Wise said, the team played well, with two exceptional saves by defender Jimmie Schmeits.

Baker 2, Burns 0

andquot;Our defense and offense were both strong,andquot; Wise said.

Chris Rama had six attempts and one goal scored. Quincy Warner had two attempts and a goal.

Billy Herman added one attempt, Jamie Mossman two attempts, Robert Schmeits one attempt, and Simon Jones one attempt.

Baker 2, Grant Union 1

andquot;This was a very close game… we fought hard to win,andquot; Wise said.

Rama had eight attempts and a goal. Warner added two attempts and a goal.

The Baker boys open their regular season Saturday at Grant Union.

The Baker girls open play Tuesday against Fruitland, Idaho, at 3 p.m. at the Complex.

Baker spikers drop three at LG jamboree

LA GRANDE Baker lost all three of its games at the La Grande volleyball jamboree Friday.

Baker lost to Pendleton 18-25, to Hermiston 22-25, and to La Grande 14-25.

Danielle Thatcher was 15-20 passing with 11 digs. Lindsey Kuehl 49-52 setting with four assists. Laura Helgerson 15-17 serving with three aces. And, Kate Vaughan was 18-25 hitting with five kills.

andquot;We had a few nerves on Friday. Being the first outing it was expected,andquot; said Baker coach Marcy Hayes. andquot;We worked through the nerves during the Pendleton game and played pretty well against Hermiston.

andquot;We had great defense against Hermiston. We were picking up all kinds of balls. Then against La Grande we got on the downhill roller coaster and couldn’t pull ourselves out. We are definitely going to work on staying consistent this week.andquot;

Baker travels to Burns Saturday for the Burns Invitational tournament beginning at 10 a.m.
