Ready for kindergarten

This month the Baker School District will assess the readiness of children planning to enroll in kindergarten next year.
The screening will be offered for children who will be 5 by Sept. 1.
The assessment covers three main areas of child development: motor skills, concepts and language. Children participate for about 20 to 30 minutes, one-on-one with an adult, in a variety of activities at three separate stations. Afterward, the coordinator will share the results with parents and discuss any potential areas of concern or interest.
Most children enrolled in a preschool will be screened at their preschool or day care site.
Children not enrolled in a preschool will be screened at the Baker School District office, 2090 Fourth St., on April 23-25 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call Sheryl Maddox at 524-2260. Each consultation will take about 45 minutes.
During the assessment, parents will be asked to pre-register their child to help the school district plan for next years classes. The childs birth certificate or a copy will be recorded. Other pre-registration forms and information also will be available.
Even if the child is unable to participate in the screening, the district is asking parents to complete the pre-registration portion at the district office and to have a copy of the birth certificate made. All students, however, must be officially registered in August with an updated immunization record.
