Powder Valley beats Condon, advances to second round

NORTH POWDER Powder Valleys starting eight still hasnt played an entire four-quarter game in almost two months.

But on Saturday the Badgers didnt mind as they steamrolled Condon 51-6 in a first-round game at the OSAA/U.S. Bank Class 1A state football championships.

Powder Valley ended the game by the 45-point mercy rule two minutes into the second half.

Powder coach Alan Stanfield said the Badgers depth, and Condons lack of depth, played a key role in the outcome.

We played a pretty good all around game, Stanfield said.

And, Condon goes only nine or 10 players deep. Our depth started showing on them in the second quarter.

Powder Valley led just 8-6 entering the second period. But, the Badgers exploded for 36 points in the quarter to go into halftime leading 44-6.

Quarterback Todd Baxter ran for three touchdowns in the quarter, and connected with Riley Martin for a fourth score.

Brody Turner added the second of his two touchdowns in the period.

Baxter ended the game early in the third period when he found Martin for a second scoring aerial.

Baxter finished the game 11 of 19 passing for 189 yards. He also ran for 98 yards on eight carries.

Todd had a phenomenal game, Stanfield said.

Turner added 115 yards rushing on just six carries. The Badgers rolled up 448 total yards.

Stanfield said the Badgers defense also shut down Condon quarterback Todd Shaffer.

Shaffer, who totalled more than 300 yards against the Badgers earlier in the season, was limited to just 71 yards on 11 carries. He was just 2 of 12 passing for 14 yards.

We didnt allow him to make any big plays, Stanfield said.

Our DBs (defensive backs) Ryan Browne, Deven Thompson and Todd Baxter had a great game.

Stanfield said the Badgers forced four turnovers interceptions by Baxter and Thompson, a fumble recovery by Martin, and a recovered onside kick converting all into scores.

Powder Valley, 10-0 on the season, travels to St. Paul Saturday for a semifinal contest. St. Paul defeated Powers 52-6 in the first round.

Stanfield said he is looking forward to playing the Buckaroos on artificial turf.

Im anxious to see our kids on the turf. I just hope it isnt going to be wet turf, he said.

The Powder coach said he knows a little about St. Paul, having watched the Bucks defeat Cove 26-6 in their first game of the season.

St. Paul is pretty balanced running and passing, Stanfield said.

They probably match up against us as well as anybody so far this season.

Top-ranked Dufur meets Alsea in the other semifinal game. Dufur advanced by beating Jordan Valley 62-36. Alsea advanced after a 56-6 thumping of North Lake.
