VOLLEYBALL: La Grande a land of victory and disappointment

Baker posted both a strong victory and a disappointing loss in La Grande, improving their GOL record but falling out of the La Grande volleyball tournament in the first round.

Baker bests La Grande in two

LA GRANDE Baker improved its Greater Oregon League volleyball record to 4-3 Thursday with a 15-8, 15-6 victory over La Grande.

We played really well, said Baker coach Michele McCauley.

We did a nice job of setting up our blocks, and we hit smart.

McCauley said senior Cassie Scrivner, in particular, had a strong outing.

Cassie had a great game, McCauley said. She really put the ball in the holes.

Scrivner finished the match 8 for 8 serving and added seven kills.

Jill Peacock was 12 for 12 serving with an ace, and had five kills. Katie Bogart added six kills; Mary Kreger was 6 for 6 serving with an ace; Lexie Johnson had two solo blocks and four deflected blocks; and Rose Supan was 6 for 6 hitting with two kills, had four solo blocks, and four deflected blocks.

Baker travels to Hermiston Tuesday for a non-league match beginning at 5 p.m.

Baker eliminated in first round of tournament

LA GRANDE Baker dropped its first match in bracket play Saturday and was eliminated from the La Grande volleyball tournament.

The Bulldogs lost 15-5, 15-7 to Middleton, Idaho.

Baker was 4-4 in pool play. The Bulldogs defeated Riverside 15-12, La Grande 15-12, Grant Union 15-12, and Fruitland, Idaho, 15-8. Baker lost to Weiser, Idaho, 15-1, Ontario 15-6, Moscow, Idaho, 15-6, and Middleton 15-4.

Baker coach Michele McCauley said Rose Supan played well throughout the day.

Supan and Jill Peacock led the Bulldogs in attacks and kills.

Kari Staten handled all of the setting for the Bulldogs, and also received praise from the Baker coach.

Bakers JV finished third in its half of the tournament.

In bracket play, Baker defeated Riverside 15-6, 15-6, and lost 15-4, 9-15, 15-11 to Moscow.

The Bulldogs were 5-1 in pool play, defeating Ontario 15-3, Riverside 15-8, Moscow 15-10, La Grande 15-4, and Fruitland 16-14. Baker lost 15-10 to Weiser.

All three Baker teams travel to Hermiston for a non-league match Tuesday.
