Cecil Larm

Cecil LeRoy Larm, 61, a long-time Baker City resident, died Sept. 5, 2001, at a foster care home.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Coles-Strommer Funeral Home, 1950 Place St. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitations will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Larm was born Jan. 25, 1940, in Baker City. He attended Baker schools. He worked for the City of Baker as a laborer and later washed windows for the businesses in Baker City. He joined the Odd Fellows Lodge, No. 25 on March 31, 1984, and received his 3rd degree on March 1, 1986.

Survivors include his brother, Francis Larm of Baker City; half brother, Edward Larm of Camas, Wash.; an aunt, Evelyn Meadown of Junction City; an uncle, Alfred Young of Central Point; cousins, Lois Taylor of Central Point, Forest Young of Klamath Falls, Terry Larm of Wallowa and Lonie Larm of Mount Vernon, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Alice Sass

Alice Cundiff Sass, 91, of Richland, died Sept. 4, 2001, at Settlers Park Assisted Living center.

Her graveside funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Eagle Valley Cemetery in Richland. Gordon Bond of the First Christian Church will officiate. There will be a reception afterward at the First Christian Church in Richland.

Mrs. Sass was born on April 24, 1910, at Halfway to Walter and Ellen Boyles Cundiff. After graduating from Richland High School in 1928, she attended Oregon Agricultural College at Corvallis.

She married Dan Hammond and lived in Salem until he went overseas during World War II. She returned to Richland with her son, Danny, in 1948.

She married Herman Sass on July 3, 1948, and they started farming the Cundiff Ranch. She and her husband milked cows for a number of years.

She loved to play cards and knit. She was always known for her sense of humor, which made her a joy and a pleasure to be around for all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband, Herman Sass; two sons, Dan Hammond, and his wife, Doris of Richland, and Peter and his wife, Pam, of Willamina; grandsons and their wives, Rod and Chris Hammond and Ross and Lynnet Hammond, all of Richland and Paul and Michael Sass of Dallas; a niece and her husband, Barbara and Harry Johnson of Rickreall; a nephew, Jerry Lambert and wife, Konja, of Omaha, Neb.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ellen; her father, Walter Cundiff; infant son, Steven; and a sister, Ruth Lambert.

Zoe Frazier

Zoe Frazier, 91, of Baker City, died Sept. 4, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center.

Disposition was by cremation at Grays West andamp; Co. Pioneer Crematory. There will be a family memorial service at Haines.

Mrs. Frazier was born on June 21, 1910, at Long Creek to Ziri and Irene Harris.

She married Dallas Frazier on Sept. 19, 1930, at John Day. The couple made their home at Bates where Mr. Frazier worked for the Edward Hines Lumber Co. They moved to Baker City to retire.

Mrs. Frazier was a homemaker most of her life and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother to her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas Frazier; daughter, Patricia Conro; and a brother, Jim Harris.

Survivors include her son-in-law, Jim Conro; grandchildren, Mike, Mark and Bruce Conro; great-grandchildren, Pat, Kelly, Keegan and Brenna Conro and Barbara Jean Buffington; and one great-great-grandchild, Wyatt Thompson.

Brett Whitley

Brett Allen Whitley, 24, of Medical Springs, died Sept. 2, 2001, at his home.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2625 Hughes Lane. Vault interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mr. Whitley was born in January of 1977 at Merced, Calif. He was a 1995 Baker High School graduate.

He enjoyed the outdoors and graduated from Treasure Valley Community College at Ontario with a degree in forestry. He enjoyed hunting, camping, snowboarding and four-wheeling.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Chuck Drummond and Dennis Whitley.

Survivors include his parents, Phil and Judy Whitley; his brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and April Whitley; grandmothers, Dorothy Drummond and Nola Whitley; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Maurice DeRoest

A memorial mass will be held Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001 at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Portland for Maurice DeRoest who died Aug. 30, 2001 from complications of Rheumatoid arthritis at age 69.

Maurice was born Nov. 10, 1931, in Baker City. He attended St. Francis Academy. He married Blanche Fuller on Nov. 27, 1950. Maurice worked for Safeway stories in Baker City, La Grande, Hermiston, The Dalles and Portland for 39 years until his retirement.

Maurice was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Safeway Employees Union. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Maurice DeRoest, his nephew Billy DeRoest and LeaAnne Roelle.

He is survived by his wife, Blanche, of Portland; two brothers, Jim DeRoest of Baker City and Gary DeRoest of Gold Beach; eight children: Sons, John DeRoest of Cottage Grove, Tony DeRoest of Portland, Thom DeRoest of Snohomish, Wash.; Joseph DeRoest of Murrietta, Calif.; and daughters, Theresa Fahlgren of Portland; Patricia Hornsveld of Fallbrook, Calif., Mary Ferland of Clackamas and Michelle Nes of Canby; extended family members; Mike, Kathy and Nicholas Roelle of Portland; 26 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
